“Manillas were originally metal bracelets or armlets and were a traditional African means of exchange. Later forms were made of copper, bronze, or brass, often horse-shoe-shaped with widened finial terminations. The universal name for manillas is Okpoho. Manillas were first observed in 1505 in Calabar, Nigeria, where they originated.” Reference: Object Biographies, by Eric Edwards, Balfour Library, Pitt Rivers Museum (2010)
