The entrance veranda of a Nupe palace had a slanting thatched roof supported by a vast array of carved posts. Not uniform in design, they often rose from an earthen pedestal, and openings in the thatch were cut out for the doorway. Sometimes this was high enough to admit a horse and rider. These Muslim people used only geometric designs on the posts, although there are some rare examples of animal designs (Bacquart, The Tribal Arts of Africa, 1998, Ginzberg, African Forms, 2000).
