Magar or Gurung mask, middle hills, Nepal, 19th – 20th C. This character with its distinctive features, appears in many versions, usually with beard and mustache.

Nepalese masks with enigmatic features are classified as primitive, shamanic or village folk art and are attributed to the local cultures of the hills of Nepal (Magar, Gurung, Tamang or Rai). Their use has long been lost and it is unknown whether the faces are those of ancestors or demons or of something else entirely.
