Wristlets, or ketohs, were originally worn on a man's left arm as a guard against the snap of a bowstring. However, by the turn of the twentieth century, they were generally worn for purely decorative purposes. Ornamented by a silver plate, they were backed with a leather band that laced closed (Brooklyn Museum, “Wrist Guard,” 08.491.8933).
