Heriz carpets are hand-woven by the Turkish inhabitants of Heriz in northern Iran. The creation of carpets is the primary source of income in Heriz, and a time-honored craft that has been passed down for generations. The skilled artisans use the same technique as that of the Mongols who invaded the region in the 13th century. Most weavers use the Turkish double-knot, and the KPSI varies. Goravan rugs come from a small village nearby Heriz. The design, color, and quality of carpets from Goravan is so similar to those from Heriz that even experts have trouble differentiating them.
